If you’re looking to start your day with a tasty breakfast, look no further than the Golden Bagel, a cute neighborhood cafe that is known for its bagel sandwiches along with a wide selection of tasty salads for lunch.
The perfect place to try some contemporary or classic Mexican cuisine is the ever-popular Mi Ranchito Mexican Restaurant. This neighborhood fixture has been booming since it first opened in 1974 and is a great place for a family dinner or date-night getaway. The PQ Certified Farmers Market is a weekly destination for many families in the area. This year-round market features locally grown organic produce in addition to tasty food and craft vendors.
Things to Do
Spend a day or two in nature at the Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve. Hiking along the 7-mile length of the preserve is a treat for any nature lover. Along the way, you’ll see beauty everywhere, from trickling streams to majestic waterfalls to over 175 bird species and abundant plant and animal life.
Nature and history combine in the reserve, as this location features many archeological sites that reveal thousands of years of Native American history. Another historically significant location located on the preserve is the oldest house in San Diego, the 1823 Adobe Ranch House.
Black Mountain Open Space Park is accessible from four different trailheads and spans over 2,000 acres of recreational open space. Enthusiastic bikers and hikers will be well rewarded for reaching the top of Black Mountain by the stunning 360-degree views of the surrounding country.
Penasquitos Creek Park is another fun afternoon trip. Available year-round, this trail has a lovely waterfall and bridge for photo opportunities and is easily accessible for walkers of all ages.
A fun twist on the traditional movie theater, the Angelika Film Center & Café shows more traditional Hollywood releases alongside foreign and independent films and holds interesting film festivals in their expansive state-of-the-art facility.
Rancho Penasquitos has a wide variety of annual community events, but one of the best is the Fiesta de Los Penasquitos and Parade. This event has been taking place at the end of May since 1995. Residents come out to spend time together and participate in a 5K Fun Run, a street fair full of local artists and businesses, and a community parade.
The most magical winter spot in southern California is Christmas Card Lane. This fun tradition was started by a local resident in 1982 and has continued as a way for the close-knit community to put their holiday spirit on full display.
